About Paul Marson-Smith

Paul has been Managing Partner of Gresham since 1998 and has overseen the recruitment of a first class team and the development of Gresham into the leading regionally based private equity firm in the UK with a network of offices in London, Birmingham, Manchester and most recently Bristol. Since he joined the firm, Gresham has completed over 50 new investments, achieved 90 realisations and has returned 2.6 times cash to its investors. Paul also leads Gresham’s fundraising drive, most recently successfully raising £350m Gresham 4 from a group of world-class investors. Paul also led Gresham’s own Management Buy Out from Zurich Financial Services in 2003 – invaluable experience which he shares with the managers Gresham is backing in their own MBOs.

Paul is absolutely committed to the partnership approach to investment, whereby Gresham actively partners with the managers it is backing. Partnership is an ethos which runs throughout every aspect of Gresham’s business.

Paul has worked in private equity for over 20 years, previously at 3i where, most significantly, he completed the MBO of Morse Computers which he believes became 3i’s largest ever capital gain at the time. Prior to that, he worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers both in London and overseas. Paul has also lectured for the BVCA.

Paul is a graduate of Thames Business School and lives near Tunbridge Wells with his wife and two children.
